1998 Tour Summary
The year's touring kicked off in Windsor, ON on April 29 and concluded in Sault Ste. Marie, MI on September 19. Two of the dates were shortened performances for radio broadcasts from Charleston, WV in June and Boulder, CO in July. The Pleasanton, CA date on July 11, was actually two separate one set performances with a new audience for each show.
From the new album there were 6 songs that were played most nights and each made it into most full concerts. Those 6 were: Drifters; Ringneck Loon; I Used To Be A Country Singer; Boathouse; A Painter Passing Through and Uncle Toad Said.
The most surprising addition to the setlists was the regular inclusion of On Susan's Floor, with songs such as Ode To Big Blue and The Watchman's Gone which were dusted off in 1997 continuing to be played this year.
There were quite a number of albums shut out this year. Back Here On Earth; Sunday Concert; Endless Wire; Salute and East Of Midnight all failed to have a song performed from them in 1998. Most surprising is the fact that East Of Midnight, which has been a staple of Lightfoot concerts since he began debuting songs from that album in 1985, didn't have a song registered, which only goes to show that as new material gets worked into the setlists, some things have to go. The most notable song dropped altogether in 1998 was Shadows. Knotty Pine which was played frequently in 1997 was also absent this year. Other songs from 1997 that didn't get played this year were, Bitter Green; Minstrel Of The Dawn; Alberta Bound; Spanish Moss; Sea Of Tranquility; A Lesson In Love; Morning Glory and Wild Strawberries. A few others from 1997 only surfaced once in 1998, Christian Island; Make Way For The Lady; Triangle and Ring Them Bells, with Restless only making it into a few shows. There were 43 different songs performed during the year. No new or previously unreleased songs were played this year.
The encores were more varied this year than most in the recent past. Long time favorite, Old Dan's Records only closed the show twice, with a variety of others such as, and even Cold On The Shoulder; Blackberry Wine; Restless; Baby Step Back; The Pony Man; Uncle Toad Said; Rainy Day People and Canadian Railroad Trilogy being employed on any given night.
SUMMARY BY ALBUM
All of this information is based on a sample of 28 out of a possible 37 setlists that were posted for the tour, so if anyone heard anything that isn't listed here, I'd be more than happy to add the song to the list. In brackets following the song is the number of times the song appeared in the 28 setlists to give you an idea of their frequency.
